FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What living and cooking equipment is included with the vehicles?
All campervans and sleepervans are fully equipped with duvet, sheets, pillows/cases, towels, cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, toaster, kettle, gas kettle and much more.

Can a child seat be fitted to the campervan?
The Lucky Cruiza and Lucky Charga can be fitted with child seats.

Are the campervans automatic or manual?
The  Lucky Sleeper and Lucky Cruiza both have automatic transmissions making it easier to drive around New Zealand. The Lucky Charga comes in manual and automatic transmissions.

How long will my batteries last?
The Lucky Cruiza and Lucky Charga have separate house batteries, which are independent of the engine battery. This battery charges whilst driving or if plugged into mains power. Using the house battery will not run the engine battery flat. This house battery, depending on usage, can last up to 48 hours without driving or being plugged into mains power. It is recommended that you drive or plug the vehicle in for a charge once a day. Since the engine battery is separate, if you flatten the house battery, you will still be able to start the engine and drive. The Lucky Sleeper does not have a separate battery and therefore caution must be taken on usage when the vehicle is parked, or the vehicle may not engine start.

How much water do I have on board?
The Lucky Cruiza has 20 liters, Lucky Sleeper has 10 Liters and the Lucky Charga has 80 Liters in their water tanks. The fresh water tank can be refilled at holiday parks and often a service station when you refuel the vehicle.

Is there heating in the vehicle?
The Lucky Cruiza, Lucky Sleeper and Lucky Charga all have a 240 volt fan heater which will only work when plugged into camp site power.

How long does the LPG last?
If you are free camping you may use a gas bottle every 10 days with average use.

What do you mean by calendar days when we book?
All campervan operators in New Zealand charge by the day, not per 24 hour period. So regardless of the time of collection and return, you will be charged for the day you collect and the day you drop your vehicle off. This is somewhat like a hotel and a rental car company all in one as you can drive and sleep in your vehicle.

How can I amend or cancel my booking?
If you wish to amend or cancel your existing booking, please contact us s soon as possible. This is so we can make sure any extensions are available for you and to reduce the cost to you for cancellations.

Is there a refund if I shorten my hire while on holiday?
No, there is no refund if you return your campervan earlier than the reserved period. However your travel insurance may in some circumstances cover the unused portion.

Do I need snow chains in New Zealand?
This is dependent on where in the country you intend to travel and over which season. We do not recommend you drive anywhere that requires snow chains, but we do rent them for a small fee for your peace of mind.

What is the safe travel speed for driving the campervans?
The open road speed limit is 100km/hour but we suggest a comfortable speed for driving your campervan is 90km/hour, especially if you have never driven one before. Should you choose to travel below the speed limit, please show courtesy to other road users by allowing them to pass.

How much fuel am I likely to use on my holiday?
This all depends on how far you travel! Most our camper vans have an average fuel consumption of 10-14 ltrs per 100kms.

Do I have to pay for road tax?
Road User Charges (diesel tax) on our diesel vehicles does apply. You will be charged at NZ$5.70 per 100kms when you hire a diesel campervan, such as the Lucky Cruiza and Lucky Charga. The Lucky Sleeper is petrol so does not incur road user charges. If you get our Sure Thing insurance at $20 per day with a zero excess this includes your Road User Charges (in other words you don’t pay diesel tax!).

Can I park and sleep in the campervan wherever I want, or do I have to stay in a campground?
It is not always necessary to go to a camp ground. It is acceptable to stop on the side of the road or in a bush reserve as long as there are no signs saying “No Parking/Overnight Camping”. Use common sense and courtesy. Please remember to take any rubbish for proper disposal later. Camp grounds usually charge around NZ$10 – $25 per night per person.

Do you supply a list of campgrounds around New Zealand?
Yes, we supply camp ground & regional guides as well as comprehensive New Zealand road maps.

Do I have to pre-book camping parks?
It is rare for powered sites to be full at camping parks. The only time it may be a problem is over the Christmas/New Year period continuing to the end of the second week of January and also the first two weeks of February. Bookings may be wise in some of the key tourist centres also.

Where are your offices located?
We have 2 offices in New Zealand located in Auckland and Christchurch. We do offer collection of your campervan anywhere in the New Zealand (outside these two centers) however this incurs an extra fee of $300 or $400 depending on where.

Can you deliver a vehicle to our hotel/motel?
You need to come to our office to collect your vehicle so we can complete the necessary documentation and show you how to use your campervan. The whole process takes about 45 minutes. We offer complimentary transfers to collect you from the airport or your hotel/motel within the airport area.

Can I pick up after hours?
We offer 24 hours, 365 days a year pick up. We have a great after hours service so if you need a campervan outside of 8am to 5pm or on a public holiday drop us a line. We are here to help guys!

Do you charge fees for one-way hires?
No, of course we do not charge for this. You shouldn’t rent from a company that would…

What happens if I break down or need assistance during my holiday?
Our camper vans are supported by Automobile Association (AA) 24-hour emergency breakdown service who are a nationwide network of reputable service agents who will deal with any problems that may arise. We can also authorize you to spend up to $100.00 in emergency repairs so that you can deal with minor matters speedily or when convenient to you, but please produce the receipt when you return from your hire for a refund.

Am I insured for windscreens and tyres?
Only if you opt for the Sure Thing insurance cover at an extra $20 per day. It is worth it!

What does the rental insurance cover?
The rental insurance cover restricts the maximum you are liable for in the event of an accident as long as you do not break the rental agreement terms and conditions. It does not cover you for any personal loss or injury. We suggest taking your own personal travel insurance.

If I have an accident and I am at fault, will I lose my entire Excess?
You will be liable for up to the amount of your excess towards the repair cost. If the damage is minor, you will only be charged the repair costs and not the entire excess.

Do I have to pay the bond?
Unlike other companies, we do not deduct this before your motorhome hire starts. We simply require a credit card imprint with the Rental Agreement. If you don’t have a credit card, we require either cash or signed Travelers Cheques in NZ$ as a bond. If there is no loss/damage or any reported incidents, speeding fines or parking tickets, we will send the cash or Travelers Cheques back to you 3 weeks after your hire ends.

I have Travel Insurance, which covers damage to the vehicle. Do I need to pay the vehicle insurance as well?
The Gambler insurance is included in our rates and this is compulsory. If you are covered by travel insurance you will not need to pay for any additional insurance excess reduction, however you will be liable to pay the excess of NZ$2000 at the time of the incident and then you would need to reclaim this excess from your travel insurer.

What happens if I have an accident and it’s not my fault?
In the event that something happens to the campervan and you are not at fault, (either a vehicle accident where someone strikes the vehicle or damage occurs while the vehicle is parked) you are liable for the damage caused to the vehicle until we are able to receive payment for those damages from the third party. Please note that third party insurance is not compulsory in New Zealand!

Mechanical faults
The hirer shall take all reasonable care to ensure that the vehicle is properly maintained during the hire period. This shall include daily checks of the oil, water and batteries. The vehicle is covered by 24 hour Automobile Association (AA) road-side assistance.

If the vehicle has any mechanical failures these problems must be reported to the Lucky Rentals as soon as possible in order to give Lucky Rentals the opportunity to rectify the problems during the rental.

The hirer is not entitled to any refund unless Lucky Rentals has been advised of the problem, and has been given the opportunity to rectify the situation. Lucky Rentals does not accept any liability for any claims made at, or after, the point of drop off.

A refund can be requested from Lucky Rentals if the breakdown has directly caused a delay in travel in one location of 48 hours or more.

Lucky Rentals is not liable for any delay in repair caused by the breakdown occurring on a weekend or public holiday.

Equipment faults
The failure of accessories such as the microwave, fridge or heated towel rail do not constitute a breakdown. Due to the nature of such accessories, Lucky Rentals will endeavour to facilitate on-road repairs, however should the repair not be possible or fail the hirer is not entitled to a vehicle change or refund.

Refunds
Any potential refund for the breakdown of the vehicle or cancellation of hire is limited to the daily rental rate of the vehicle for each day. This limit is for all costs incurred by the hirer and for the avoidance of doubt includes substitute rental vehicle and accommodation costs.

Lucky Rentals does not accept any liability for currency exchange rate fluctuations.

Vehicle substitution and design
Should the vehicle booked be unavailable through unforeseen circumstances, Lucky Rentals reserves the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification and at no extra cost to the hirer or cancel the booking and refund the hirer all monies paid.

Important
Lucky Rentals reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions, vehicle specifications and tariffs at any time without prior notice.
Lucky Rentals reserves the right to refuse any rental at its own discretion.

When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier’s rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.

While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. Information disclosure
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.

Amendments
Please note that some suppliers treat an amendment as a new booking and apply the rate current at the time the amendment is made to recalculate the entire booking amount (not just the days changed). If the rental period is increased, an additional deposit may be required. If the rental period is shortened which results in a reduction of the rental charges, the deposit amount will remain unchanged, and the difference between the original and revised deposit is forfeited (it cannot be used towards remaining rental charges). To request a change to a confirmed booking, please use the alterations request link on your confirmation. Any alterations are subject to availability and the approval of the supplier. In addition to the alteration policy of the supplier stated in their terms, the following charges will apply:
Motorhome rental alterations (all charges stated in local currency):
To change dates or times that result in a recalculation of rental rates, or to change vehicles or locations: 75.00
To add or remove extras to/from confirmed booking: 20.00
The alteration fee will not be charged if your alteration request is not possible.
